🎮 About This Game

Sleight is a memory game with one rule laid over it: the board rearranges itself. Eighteen tiles, nine pairs, and the two of you take turns flipping two at a time — but every time a turn ends without a pair, three tiles trade places in front of you. They slide, slowly and in plain sight, so nothing is hidden; the question is only how many of them you can follow at once. That single rule changes what the game rewards. In ordinary pairs, the person who remembers more wins, and memory is something you arrive with rather than something you practise over an evening. Here a large memory becomes something to maintain: every fact you are holding is a fact the shuffle can quietly falsify, and a belief you no longer notice is wrong costs you a whole turn to discover. First to five pairs wins. Solo plays the same board against a CPU that forgets and mis-tracks exactly the way a person does.

🎯 How to Play

On your turn you turn over two tiles. Match them and you keep the pair and go again; miss and they turn back, three tiles swap places, and it is the other player's turn. First to five of the nine pairs wins, so a game runs about ten turns. Everything is a tap — a tile, an option on the title screen, the difficulty chip, the MENU button under the board. On a keyboard the arrow keys move the highlight and Space turns a tile over. Because only one of you is ever moving, both players share the same controls and simply pass the device, which is why there is no second control set to learn. The swap is the part to actually play. It is deliberately slow and the two tiles arc apart rather than sliding through each other, so following one of them is easy and following four is not. What that means in practice is that you should decide, before the tiles start moving, which ones you care about — usually the one you have just seen and the one you were already planning to claim. Everything else you let go of on purpose. Solo is the same game against a CPU whose difficulty is exactly two numbers: how many tiles it can hold and how many swaps it can follow. Easy holds three and follows one, Normal five and two, Hard eight and three. It never peeks at the board and its beliefs go stale the same way yours do.

💡 Tips & Strategy

  • Pick your two tiles to protect before the swap starts, not while it is running. Once three pairs are moving there is no time to choose, and trying to hold all of them is how you end up holding none.
  • Watching a tile you cannot use yet is usually worth more than watching the one you are about to claim anyway. If you are taking a pair this turn, that knowledge is about to be spent — spend your attention on the tile that has to survive until next turn.
  • A confident wrong guess is the most expensive thing in the game. It costs the turn, and it also tells your opponent exactly where two tiles are. When you are not sure a memory survived the last shuffle, prefer turning over something genuinely unknown.
  • Do not chase a big memory. Every extra tile you are holding is another thing the shuffle can falsify without you noticing, and past a handful you will spend more turns discovering stale beliefs than you gain from the extra knowledge.
  • Your opponent's misses are free information and they are on the same board as yours, so watch their turn as carefully as your own — especially the swap that follows it, which is the one you did not cause and are most likely to look away from.
  • Matching keeps the board still. A run of pairs is worth more than the points alone, because nothing rearranges while you are the one scoring.
  • Solo is a good way to learn how many swaps you can actually follow, and the honest answer for most people is two. Pick the CPU that matches that rather than the one that flatters it.

🛠 From the Devs

Two versions of this were measured and thrown away before the shuffle existed. A plain memory duel is unshippable here: simulated over thousands of games, one extra item of working memory was worth a 70% win rate and three items 96%. Memory span is a trait people arrive with, so that is not a difficulty curve, it is a verdict on who is allowed to enjoy the game. The second attempt added a move that let you bank a tile as permanently visible, which narrowed the gap nicely — until we measured how often a player should actually use it and the answer was never, for everyone, because it costs a turn and hands your opponent the same fact. A device nobody should use is a handicap slider wearing a mechanic's clothes. Both failed for the same reason: knowledge accumulates, so anything that merely adds information helps the stronger memory at least as much. The shuffle works because memory is private but attention is shared. Holding nine tiles means nine things to re-track when the board moves, and nobody can follow more than a few, so the rest do not fade — they go wrong. Measured at three swaps a turn, a one-item gap is worth 55% and a two-item gap 65%, while someone who does not watch at all still loses 98% of the time.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a good memory to win at Sleight?

Less than you would think, and that is the design. A big memory helps far less here than in ordinary pairs, because every tile you are holding is one the shuffle can falsify while you are not looking, and acting on a stale belief costs a whole turn. What actually decides games is choosing which two or three tiles to follow through the swap and letting the rest go.

Is the CPU cheating? It seems to know where things are.

It is not. It holds a real, limited memory of tiles it has seen — three on Easy, five on Normal, eight on Hard — and it can only follow one, two or three of the swaps that touch what it knows. Everything else in its memory goes stale exactly the way yours does, which is why it sometimes turns over two tiles with complete confidence and gets nothing.

Can two of us play on one phone?

Yes, and it is the easiest of our games to do it with. Only one player moves at a time, so there is nothing to split: you both tap the same screen and hand the phone over when your turn ends. Every control is a tap, including the difficulty and the menu, so no keyboard is involved at any point.
